" US OPEN 2009 - Flushing Meadows "
The US Open, formally the United States Open tennis championships, is a tennis tournament which is the modern incarnation of one of the oldest tennis championships in the world, with the U.S. National Championship (for men's singles) first contested in 1881. Since 1987, the US Open has been chronologically the fourth and final Grand Slam tennis tournament each year. It is held annually in August and September over a two-week period (the weeks before and after Labor Day weekend). The main tournament consists of five different event championships: men's and women's singles, men's and women's doubles, and mixed doubles, with additional tournaments for senior, junior, and wheelchair players. Since 1978, the tournament has been played on acrylic hard courts at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center at Flushing Meadows-Corona Park in Queens, New York City.
The US Open differs from the other three Grand Slam tournaments in that there are final-set tiebreaks. In the other three tournaments, the fifth set for men and the third set for women continue until someone wins by two games.
[ Prize Money ]
The 2009 US Open purse will top $21.6 million, marking the third consecutive year that the tournament's prize money has increased by $1 million. In addition to the base purse of $21.6 million, the top three men's and top three women's finishers in the Olympus US Open Series may earn up to an additional $2.6 million in bonus prize money at the US Open, providing a potential total payout of $24.2 million.
Both the men's and women's US Open singles champions will earn a record $1.6 million with the ability to earn an additional $1 million in bonus prize money (for a total $2.6 million potential payout) based on their performances in the Olympus US Open Series. In addition, both US Open singles champions will receive a new 2010 Lexus IS Convertible.
The Olympus US Open Series Bonus Challenge rewards the top three men's and top three women's finishers each year with bonus prize money at the US Open and has resulted in the largest paychecks in tennis history for men (2007 - Roger Federer, $2.4 million) and women (2005 - Kim Clijsters, $2.2 million).

[ Court of Champions ]
The US Open Court of Champions honors and celebrates the achievements of the event's greatest champions with an individual, permanent monument to serve as a lasting tribute to the legendary singles champions during the 126-year history of the event whose talents have helped build this tournament into one of the world's top sporting events. The 9,000-square-foot outdoor pavilion, bounded by the South Entry Gate and the Arthur Ashe Commemorative Garden and Sculpture, also features a complete listing of all U.S. singles champions since the competition began in 1881.
To be eligible for the US Open Court of Champions, players must have won at least one singles title at the U.S. Championships and have been retired from singles at the US Open in the last five years. In 2003, the inaugural class of inductees consisted of Jimmy Connors, Chris Evert, Billie Jean King, Rod Laver, Bill Tilden and Helen Wills. The 2004 class, consisting of Jack Kramer, Margaret Court, John McEnroe and Steffi Graf, was the last to include four inductees. One male and one female player have been added since that time, with the exception of Althea Gibson, who served as the sole inductee in 2007.
The US Open Court of Champions attraction is located between the South Plaza and Courts 10 and 13.
