Melbourne (Australia), 26 ene (EFE).- El croata Marin Cilic venció al estadounidense Andy Roddick por 7-6 (4), 6-3, 3-6, 2-6 y 6-3 y se clasificó por primera vez para unas semifinales del Grand Slam en el Abierto de Australia.

Cilic es el primer jugador croata que logra esta ronda en el abierto australiano, y lo ha hecho tras resolver por tercera vez un partido a cinco sets en este torneo. Antes había necesitado batallar hasta el último suspiro contra el australiano Bernard Tomic y ante el argentino Juan Martín del Potro, y hoy contra Roddick, con quien lleva ya un balance de dos victorias por una derrota.

De nuevo una gran batalla tuvo lugar en la Rod Laver Arena, escenario que se ha sido testigo en lo que va de torneo de encarnizados duelos a muerte. El Roddick-Cilic ha sido uno de ellos, con los dos jugadores en pos de la victoria durante tres horas y 50 minutos.

El estadounidense, campeón júnior de este torneo en 2000, y verdugo del chileno Fernando González este año, tuvo problemas con el hombro y recibió masaje en la pista tras ceder el primer set, operación que se repitió luego más tarde.

Perdió también el segundo, pero cuando parecía perdido fue capaz de remontar los dos siguientes. Cilic fue el más contumaz en su ejercicio y el que tuvo las ideas más claras, y tras dejar escapar el cuarto, rompió de inicio en el último parcial para llevar a Roddick contra las cuerdas por 4-1.

Un golpe de revés del ex campeón del Abierto de EE.UU. cerca de la red significó la derrota del último americano que quedaba vivo. Y Cilic cayó de rodillas para luego estirarse de espaldas sobre la pista central.

Con 20 saques directos, cinco menos que su rival, Cilic cortó la racha de nueve victorias seguidas que llevaba Roddick, reciente campeón del torneo de Brisbane, el 18 de su carrera.

The 21-year-old's 7-6, 6-3, 3-6, 2-6, 6-3 victory over Andy Roddick at the Australian Open today took him into his first grand-slam semi-final, where he will await the winner of the quarter-final showdown between the defending champion, Rafael Nadal, and the No5 seed, Andy Murray. Until last summer, he had never made it past the fourth round at any of the four grand slams but all that changed when he beat Murray en route to the quarter-finals at the US Open last September. Now he is within three sets of reaching his first grand-slam final.

For the third time in four matches, Cilic went the full five sets and he almost blew his golden chance. At two sets up and with Roddick affected by a shoulder injury, he was almost home and dry but then the nerves set in, the arm became heavy and the mistakes flowed. Roddick is nothing if not a fighter and though he was clearly not at 100% he battled his way back.

When he levelled at two sets apiece, it looked as if the American would go on to win the match but the first game of the decider proved to be the pivotal point. The seventh-seeded Roddick forced three break points at 0-40 and a fan yelled "Come on Andy, you've got him now". But that was the signal for Cilic to battle back. Shaking off the lethargy of the previous two sets he dug deep, saved all three break points and held serve.

An errant forehand gave Cilic the vital break in the fourth game and he held the advantage throughout the rest of the set. The service game he put in at 5-3 was one of his best of the match and he sank to his knees in delight.

The big question for Cilic now must be whether he can recover physically in time for his semi-final. "Yeah, why not?" he said. "I can go another five-setter."
